an honest "think about it" question

has anyone noticed the trend lately of higher ups showing their "real" side? If you watch the presidential debates, you can even see politicians trying to be "just another guy like me". In the world of business it's always been "he/she's the boss. you have to act professional when you want to talk to them/ you can't talk to them". Nowadays, everyone - including advertising- has come down to the point where it's all supposed to be relaxed and casual. What do you guys think about this new trend? By the time we get to be managerial levels, what kind of environment would we be getting into? you can even see it in your teachers- they like talking and joking around as much as you do. The generation of the stick in the muds has passed the torch to people who are less inclined to be super-businessy. If you dont want to respond you dont have to. Im not the teacher so its cool if you dont care. Just sayin- what do you think its gonna be like in 3-4 years? and are you concerned or even care about the point i just made?

I agree, with you totally. After watching the debates it is funny how Political Leaders even try to "lower" themselves to relate to the norm. Business executives I feel need to relate to their most basic employee in some respect, but at the same time maintain their management stature.

i also agree. i think it is very important for manangers to be more down to earth and be easier to talk to and be more accessible. i think the more they act casual, the more they can relate to their employees and would help establish a better working rapport.

I like the growing trend. Breaking down those barriers may help us solve problems TOGETHER for the benefit of EVERYONE.

I think it is great to be able to relate to the people you work with and the people you work “for”. The attorney I work “for” never says I work “for” her she always says, she works “with” me. That one little word has made a huge difference in my attitude toward her and her firm. I like to know that just because she has a higher degree than I do doesn’t make her better at her job or a better person than me. She recognizes my talents and always is open to new ideas. I know this is not how a lot of bosses do things, but when you become a boss you might like to keep this in mind. I think you will get a lot more out of your employees and they will respect you because of it.

I think being a bit more relatable and down to earth creates a better enviroment in the work place or classroom. As long as the person in charge is effective and can get their point across. There's nothing wrong with it unless their coming across as a phony otherwise people can appreciate when your honest and sincere.

i agree completely. I think if managers are more down to earth then it is easier to talk to them but they should also show authority. You should show authority but also be respectful to your employees. The employees will respect you more for it.

so no one thinks that the corporate boss, who makes like 100million dollars + a year should not act casual, because his/her position gives them responcibility over thousands of peoples jobs... its a 2 sided arguement. on the one side you have better productivity and an open communication between management levels. but then you have less respect between divisions, and the higher ups think they can act like the lower leveled employees but they get paid much more to do much more and act in a manor of their position.

The Politica leaders today are only acting norm because all they want is our vote and they know if we agree or connect with what they are saying and trying to relate to then they have our vote. Politics are not whose smarter in this world its whos more likable. Is a business man going to hire the smart geek that has his nose in the books and knows everything, maybe but most mangers hiring someone that is friendly and LIKABLE! because they know that they can connect with people and make sure they have a good time with a partner even if his works not 100%, no one can be perfect but people can be likable. the economy will turn around, do we know when(no) but all good things come to an end and all bad things are fixable. We came out of The "GREAT" Depression without the knowledge we have today and still became a better country.

Managers should be somewhat laid back to the point where you can talk to them without being scared or having to worry that you might say the wrong thing. but managers need to show that they are your boss and just because you can talk to them doesnt mean that you can get away with anything.

i agree. I think it would be easier to talk to managers if they were more down to earth. it would be easier to get along with them if you could carry a convo, and people would respect them more.

I agree that, it is very impotyany for leaders to be more down to earth. In that way, leaders may be easier to talk to emplpees. it may help build a better working amicability.

i see where you're coming from. the important people are obviously older than we are, and demographically have their generation in common. as they retire they must 'pass the torch' to those of equal ability (we all hope). it just so happens to be as the generation gap between them and ourselves narrows, we can agree more with the pending views. what i have to ask is: what happens when we're about to retire and pass the torch, how will people 3 generations younger feel about us and our policies/ ethics?

matt, your bit about the 100million dollar execs. it seems most people who are that 'important' feel removed from the average member of society. on that same token there are people who earn 7.50 an hour at mcdonalds with the same mind frame. it just so happens that money is a great fuel for it. whether they should or should not act casual like they float with the rest of us, isnt for anyone to judge. its their personality. :\
